Bright White

This main floor renovation focused mostly on the kitchen, but, as many projects inevitably do, spilled into the adjoining family room, main entrance and staircase. Our clients were looking for an airier, more open and brighter main floor, while increasing the current function. This was not a large space and the clients wanted to add an island, full-height pantries, a breakfast area, a spot for larger dinner parties and an open concept feel to the family room. By extending the kitchen into the existing living/ dining room area, and with carefully thought out space-planning, we were able to give them everything on their wish list! We opted to leave the wall between the kitchen and family room, creating an over-sized opening that still felt open and spacious and allowed for furniture placement in the adjoining family room. A long, narrow island houses the sink, dishwasher and wine display. The overhang is a comfortable ledge for gathering guests, but we were also able to tuck in a breakfast area and stools. Banquette seating at the rustic dining table is a great space saver and always everyones favourite seat at the table! An all-white kitchen can be pretty uninteresting without carefully layered textures, patterns and materials. We added glass doors with curved mullions and a full-height pantry where we repeated the glass doors, but with a privacy frost finish. The herringbone patterned back splash in carrara marble adds interest and dimension with layers of whites and blue-y greys. New rustic plank wood floors add another texture, warmth and grounding for the white finishes. Speaking of finishes, mixing a bit of soft gold in the pendant lights and accessories is a warm foil to the brushed nickel hardware and stainless steel appliances. We updated the family room with custom designed bookcases, bench seating and fireplace surround in the same warm white as the kitchen cabinetry. We also carried the white into the entry and stairwell with applied mouldings, framed full-length mirror and custom door. From the moment you enter the front door, this new design is inviting, bright and airy, and highly-functional. Everything they asked for…and more!

Let's talk about your next design project.
