Coastal Blues

This family room was once a sunroom addition, complete with a never used hot tub and was closed off from the adjoining kitchen. Our clients have a young family and needed a space that was open to the kitchen, and that provided a space for play, relaxing as a family and entertaining. They wanted a family room that was kid-friendly, organized, warm and comfortable. We wanted to blend styles with classic lines, natural materials and a coastal/industrial/farmhouse vibe. We started by replacing the wall to the kitchen with a custom glass railing and stairs for great site-lines between the two spaces. The new gas fireplace extends to the vaulted ceiling with a simple shiplap cladding, and a small scale herringbone Oriental Alps marble surround. We designed the built-in for the tv with plenty of closed storage and open shelves and we love the wood top with the white millwork. We added more patterns with chevron and paisley toss pillows, a Marrakesh area rug, all layered with textures of linen, leather and velvet. A beautiful and super-functional sideboard with iron banding detail separates the seating and crafting areas. A custom built-in banquette is a perfect spot for crafts or casual meals. Integrated drawer storage is great to stow away and hide supplies. We had the pedestal table made in a forgiving distressed finish maple with a fun pale blue stain. We layered more fabric patterns with the seat cushion in a blue and white pinstripe and back pillows in houndstooth and a colourful watercolour floral.

Let's talk about your next design project.
